Every time the winter period comes back around there is the age-old question: “are winter tyres worth it?"
There are many benefits that come from investing in winter tyres. Not only do they make sure you’re set for snowfall and rain, but they can also provide you with better control over your vehicle in cold weather conditions. we've put together a short guide on the importance of winter tyres.
What are winter tyres?
Different types of tyres are designed for different road and weather conditions. Winter tyres are innovatively constructed to endure cold temperatures (below 7oC). The rubber and tread pattern is designed to provide better braking, allowing you to gain better control over your vehicle when you need to. This ability is essential for when you are driving on snowy, icy and wet road conditions.
Why winter tyres are important
Preparing your car for winter ensures you are safe on the road at all times. Having winter tyres essentially provides you with an extra layer of protection when you are on risky road conditions.
This is important for those of you who are living outside the city and in more rural areas. As weather conditions tend to be a lot worse and stay that way for a longer period of time, you need something that can take you from point A to point B safely. Alternatively, if you are someone who has to travel to work during a snowy period, you need a tyre that you can easily swap to ensure your vehicle is fully equipt.
Do winter tyres make a difference?
Winter tyres don't necessarily have to be used in just winter. They are actually designed for any cold weather conditions with a temperature below 7 degrees.
When your vehicle is fitted with winter tyres, there is less chance of skidding in wet and icy conditions. This means in the event of sharp turns, you have more control. Along with reinforcing grip on the road, winter tyres will have a positive effect on your stopping distance. This is significant for when the road surface has been compromised.
When winter is over, you can simply swap back to your regular tyres. In some ways, the winter tyres allow a break in use for your everyday tyres. this essentially makes both sets of tyres last longer.
Is it acceptable to use winter tyres all year round?
Having the correct tyre for the right type of weather ensures your car can handle the road condition without causing unnecessary risk to the occupants of the vehicle. Typically, winter tyres are not really suited to be used all year round. The main reason for this is because they perform their best when under 7 degrees Celcius.
For dryer roads and warm temperatures, summer or all-season tyres are far better suited. This is because they have a different type of tread and grip on the road surface. So, we recommend you change your tyres when the weather begins to warm up again.
