Britain’s six-month MOT extension scheme is to end early, The Department for Transport has confirmed, and mandatory MOT tests will be reintroduced from August 1st, 2020.
The policy which granted an automatic extension for cars, vans and motorcycles with an MOT due to expire from the end of March 2020 was planned to run for a whole year but the Department for Transport has confirmed it will stop the scheme ahead of schedule due to country beginning to leave lockdown measures.

Why is the MOT extension ending?
As non-essential services start to re-open in line with government guidance, and more vehicles are back on the roads, having an up-to-date MOT will help to keep vehicles safe to drive.
When will the MOT extension end?
Mandatory MOT testing will be reintroduced from August 1st, 2020.
Announcing the change, Roads Minister Baroness Vere said: “As people return to our roads, it is vital that motorists are able to keep their vehicles safe. That’s why as restrictions are eased, from August 1st, MOT testing will again become mandatory.
“Garages across the country are open and I urge drivers who are due for their MOT to book a test as soon they can.”

What happens if I already have an MOT exemption?
These changes only affect vehicles with MOT’s due to expire after 31st July 2020. Drivers with a vehicle due an MOT before August 1st will still be granted the six-month extension but are being reminded that they must keep their car in a roadworthy condition or face a fine and possible prosecution.
Do I need to book my MOT now?
If your MOT is due after 31st July 2020, it is highly recommended that you book your slot in advance. We continue to deal with a backlog of work and are expecting higher than usual levels of bookings due to the MOT extension.
