Free scrap tyres for local schools, nurseries and playgroups
Our old tyres have found a new home — the school playground.
At the start of August we began offering our scrap tyres free of charge to local schools, nurseries and playgroups, timed so deliveries would arrive ready for the new school term. The response has been incredible — more than 50 settings across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have already been in touch.
The tyres are worn-out casings that can no longer be used safely on the road and would normally leave our depots for shredding. Instead, our mobile tyre-fitting vans drop them off free of charge on their rounds — and once they arrive, they start a second life. Schools and nurseries have been turning them into:
- Planters for flowers, herbs and vegetables
- Obstacle courses and outdoor play trails
- Mud kitchens and sensory play areas
- Seating, dens and whatever else the children dream up
They can be cut, shaped and painted — and early-years staff have proved endlessly inventive with them.
Ryan O’Donnell, our Marketing Director, said: “Every garage in the country has a stack of tyres waiting to be collected and shredded. To us they’re a waste product, but to a nursery they’re an obstacle course, a planter or a pirate ship. Being at the heart of the community is one of our values, and this is the simplest way we’ve found to live it — our vans are driving past these schools every day anyway.”
