The model was first shown to the public at the 1972 Paris Motor Show and went on sale in 1976. The decision to cease production comes just two years after Ford announced plans to delete the iconic Escort nameplate, following in the footsteps of its illustrious stablemate.
The Ford Fiesta name dates back over 45 years in an era when the famous badges were set to rub shoulders with vehicles like the Volkswagen Golf. But few would deny that over the last couple of decades, it became one of Britain’s most popular cars.
Over 10 million Fiestas have been sold since it was introduced, making the Fiesta the most popular European car.
The decision to seize production on the Ford Fiesta comes after sales being by down 30% and a £1.5 billion annual loss, the decision to terminate production was inevitable.
The Ford Fiesta is, in essence, a small economy car that combines function and style. It began as a replacement for the ancient RS2000 with a new design from when it was launched in 1976. It sold well thanks to its affordability and compact size. It also helped that it had become something of a lifestyle product at the time.
The first generation of the Fiesta used many components from the Ford Escort, whilst the second and third generations were all new vehicles. On launch, it was available as a three-door hatchback as well as a four-door sedan/hatchback with internal competition from Vauxhall/Opel’s Astra and Nissan’s Micra. Since 2012, the name has been applied to a revived model (fourth generation), with its designations in Ford Europe reflecting its class status: S for saloon (sedan), ST for hatchback and RS for estate.
