2022 electric car sales surpass record high in UK as more and more road users continue to switch from petrol and diesel in favour of an electric vehicle.
More than 1.6million new cars were sold in the UK in 2022 which is a fall of 2% from the previous year, proving to be the lowest number of registrations of new vehicles in the UK for 30 years.
However, 17% of cars sold in 2022 were electric. This proved electric car sales to be greater than the total number of new diesel cars for the first time ever with the Tesla Model Y being the third bestselling car in the UK in 2022.
As a result electric car sales rose from over 190,000 to 267,000 with their market share rising to 16.6%.
The sale of new petrol and electric vehicles is set to be banned from 2030, with some hybrid cars still being allowed to stay on sale until 2035, so it is highly likely that the number of electric cars sold in 2023 and onwards will continue to rise compared to the previous.
It was announced in November 2022 that from April 2025 electric vehicles will no longer be exempt from vehicle excise duty tax, which did not go down with electric car users.
This means that from the first year electric cars will have to pay the lowest rate of £10 then the current standard rate of £165 each year and this will apply to all electric vehicles registered after April 2017.
Last year a record amount of public electric car chargers was installed, meaning there is now more than 37,000 public charges available to road users across the UK.
The government has predicted that there will need to be over 300,000 public chargers available to electric car users in 2030 when the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles will be stopped.
To reach this target more than 100 new chargers will have to be installed every day with the current rate installed a day reportedly being only 23 by the SMMT.
