Do I have to have my vehicle serviced at a main dealer franchise?

/ Lindleys Autocentres
“Do I have to have my car serviced at a dealership to keep my new car warranty?” – A question we get asked daily at Lindleys Autocentres.
The short answer to that question is no. Under EU block exemption legislation, which has been around for many years now. A manufacturer cannot force a buyer to have their car serviced by their official dealership network.
You may be thinking, well what happens when we leave the European Union on the 29th March 2019? The block exemption will remain in force incorporated in our domestic law until it expires on the 31st May 2022. Then the UK will make its own block exemption, or Domestic Exemption Order, under section 6 of the Competition Act – if it sees fit.
Servicing and your new car warranty
As a car owner, you’re entitled to take your car to any licensed garage or mechanic for servicing, but you must ensure that the servicing is carried out exactly as per the manufacturers servicing schedule to retain your warranty.
This means servicing must be undertaken at the right time and must use any genuine parts or lubricants specified by the manufacturer.
How does it work at Lindleys Autocentres with manufacturer approved servicing?
At Lindleys Autocentres, we’re fully equipped to service your vehicle whilst retaining your warranty cover.
- We have access to all the technical information from your manufacturer so we can follow your manufacturers service schedule perfectly.
- We will only use genuine parts and lubricants specified by the manufacturer.
- Your service book will be stamped, or online service records updated to inform your manufacturer.
- You will receive the same service for your vehicle whilst saving yourself money. Within a few miles of Lindleys Autocentres, you can search your main dealer and compare prices and you’ll be quoted often 100’s of pounds more for the same job.
You may have heard that you must go to your main dealer franchise for servicing to retain your manufacturer’s warranty, but this is simply not the case.
