What to look for when buying tyres
Creating a checklist of what you’re specifically looking for can help you go in with an idea of the type of tyres you need.
-
Do you live in an area that rains all the time and you drive a lot on wet roads?
-
Do you live near the sea where most of the time you’re driving on hot, dry roads?
-
Do you live in a town and drive leisurely?
-
Do you commute to work and drive a lot on the motorway?
-
Do you do a lot of city driving where congestion charges are in place? And
-
Do you do a lot of stop-start driving and often find yourself in slow moving traffic?
All of these factors can be important when deciding which tyres to fit on your car and different tyre brands offer different features and benefits.
With that in mind, take a look at our list of premium, mid range and budget tyres.
Best premium tyres
For those wanting to invest in the highest quality tyres on the market that offer everything from different weather condition tyres, to high performance on the road, you can’t get any better tyres than these premium ones.
Continental tyres
Being one of the top 5 largest tyre manufacturers in the world, Continental produce tyres which are highly versatile performing great in both wet and dry weather conditions. It is for this reason why they’re most commonly fitted on sports cars.
In the U.K. we experience hot Summers and cold Winters, so fitting your car with Continental tyres for 6-9 months of the year might be a wise option in a fit-and-forget fashion.
For the colder months, we’d advise fitting your car with Winter tyres.
Pirelli tyres
Pirelli might be one of the most recognised brands on the list due to their ongoing sponsorship with Formula 1 racing for the last 9 years. And whilst our vehicle technicians are good, we’re not sure we can beat the fast-paced pit stop times set in the F1.
However, Pirelli are premium tyres for a reason, offering fantastic handling in all conditions and have tyres specifically for all-season occasions.
But it’s not just the brand you’re paying for, you’re paying for one of the highest quality tyres on the market that not only have a great reputation, but back it up with the on-road performance.
Bridgestone tyres
The largest tyre manufacturer in the world. Bridgestone are perhaps the best of the best, manufacturing tyres for all vehicles, sizes and occasions. And in our list, they only just beat Michelin to being one of the top premium brands on the market, simply due to being the biggest in the world in terms of revenue earned.
Bridgestone probably have the most varied amount of tyres in this list from run-flat tyres to all-season tyres which are great for dry and wet conditions, as well as city driving or for more country road driving.
One thing is for sure, is that all of their tyres offer great handling and a solid grip on the road.
If you want to invest in a good set of tyres for your car, which are perhaps an all-rounder, ticking many boxes of what you’d want from tyres, it’ll be harder to look elsewhere than Bridgestone.
Best mid-range tyres
There are a lot of mid-range tyres on the market and for those who want quality but are conscious of price, well, there has to be some give and take. These brands have a great reputation for being some of the top mid range tyres on the market, whilst offering competitive prices on their tyre brands.
Avon tyres
Since 1904 Avon Tyres have been manufacturing a range of vehicle tyres in the U.K. and whilst this is an established brand in car tyres, the likes of Pirelli, Michelin and Bridgestone have come along and knocked them off the top spot.
But don’t dismiss them just because of that. If you’re looking for a set of tyres to invest in that you don’t intend to replace in the next 6 months, Avon could be the one to go for.
Their long lasting tyres offer great grip on the road and low noise, a lot of cheap car tyres on the market can be quite noisy to run, whereas Avon’s tyres are smooth and quiet.
Michelin tyres
Similar to their namesake, they are awarded 5 Michelin stars in our most popular tyre brand review. A British manufacturer similar to Avon, Michelin are one of the top three European tyre makers, the others being Continental and Pirelli.
With a wide range of different tyres available, you won’t struggle to find a tyre or size to fit your car. And with great handling and maximum grip on the road, Michelin are a great all-rounder for fitting tyres that can perform to a high standard, regardless of the weather or the road.
Yokohama tyres
Since sponsoring Chelsea F.C. in the English Football Premier League, more people have started buying Yokohama tyres. And for good reason, these tyres are durable, versatile and are great all-round performance tyres.
Offering both Summer and Winter tyres, Yokohama are great for driving in the wet, but in dry conditions, it’s difficult to argue a case for them as their competitors have a slight advantage.
But that’s not to say the tyres they produce aren’t as good as others on this list, they’re still a great option for those looking for mid range tyres.
Best budget tyres
Last on our list are budget tyres for those who want to go with a reputable tyre manufacturer but don’t want to spend top dollar for the highest quality of brands such as Pirelli, Bridgestone and Continental. These tyres offer a cheaper alternative whilst still maintaining a level of high-quality tyres.
Hankook tyres
Hankook offer a wide range of different tyres, available for all types of vehicles and all-occasions too, whether you mostly drive in dry conditions around your town or if you drive further distances for work or business.
Hankook tyres offer fantastic handling and grip on the road, regardless of the weather, so if you do often drive in both dry and wet conditions, fitting your car with Hankook tyres might be the way to go.
Firestone tyres
We’ve already mentioned Bridgestone on this list as premium tyre manufacturers but their sub-brand Firestone, offer just as impressive handling and grip on the road but for a fraction of the price.
Being fully versatile and durable, fitting your car with Firestone tyres will not only give you the grip on the road you need, it’ll also give you a set of high-performance tyres that can compete with some of the mid range and even premium tyres on this list.
Dunlop tyres
Operating under Goodyear tyres, Dunlop offer a cost-effective option for those on a budget.
Originally being a British tyre manufacturing company founded in 1889, they’ve since been bought-out by Goodyear as an alternative to Goodyears’ premium range.
But don’t be discouraged, Dunlop tyres still maintain a lot of their ethos since they first started out, producing tyres that perform great in wet and dry conditions.
Bonus! Car manufacturer tyres
You might be surprised to see car manufacturer tyres on this list. And whilst car manufacturers don’t produce their own tyres, the tyres your car comes equipped with are usually fitted with good reason.
Take a look at our car manufacturer based tyres, Audi, BMW, Ford and more. Where, we recommend which tyres we think would work best for your car.
