Why Do BYD Seal Rear Tyres Wear Out So Quickly?
If you’ve recently bought a BYD Seal, there’s a good chance you’ll be impressed by its performance, refinement and low running costs. But there’s one area that can catch owners by surprise, and that is rear tyre wear.
At Lindleys Tyres & Alignment on Daleside Road, Nottingham, we see a lot of car tyres and ecently had a 2025 BYD Seal into our workshop with just 18,240 miles on the clock.
The rear tyres had worn down to just 2mm of tread, while the front tyres still had around 3.5mm remaining. Although the front tyres still had usable tread, the customer chose to replace all four tyres at the same time.
What made this particularly interesting was that the vehicle was still fitted with its original factory Continental Premium Contact 6 tyres (235/45 R19 99V, DOT code 4124), giving us a real-world example of how quickly the rear tyres can wear on a powerful rear-wheel-drive electric vehicle.
The customer chose to replace all four tyres with a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 (235/45 R19 99V XL) tyres.

The original rear Continental PremiumContact 6 tyre on this 2025 BYD Seal had worn to just 2mm after 18,240 miles.
Why do the rear tyres wear faster on a BYD Seal?
Unlike many family cars, the rear-wheel-drive BYD Seal delivers all of its power through the rear wheels.
Every time you accelerate, the rear tyres are responsible for putting over 300PS of instant electric power onto the road. Unlike a petrol or diesel engine, an electric motor delivers maximum torque almost immediately, placing greater demands on the driven tyres from the moment you pull away.
The BYD Seal is also a relatively heavy car thanks to its battery pack. Combine the extra weight with instant acceleration and premium performance tyres, and it’s easy to understand why the rear tyres can wear considerably faster than the fronts.
Is 18,240 miles normal?
Every driver is different, and tyre life depends on factors such as driving style, tyre pressures, wheel alignment and the roads you use.
However, we’re beginning to see more powerful electric vehicles arrive in our workshops with rear tyres wearing significantly faster than the fronts, particularly rear-wheel-drive models.
This is one of the first BYD Seals we’ve seen requiring replacement rear tyres, and it certainly won’t be the last. As more of these vehicles reach higher mileages, it’ll be interesting to see whether similar wear patterns become common.
Don’t rely on your MOT to tell you
One thing worth remembering is that this BYD Seal wasn’t due its first MOT yet.
Despite being only a year old, the rear tyres had already reached 2mm. While the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, tyre performance—particularly in wet weather—reduces noticeably as tread depth falls below around 3mm.
That’s why it’s worth checking your tyres regularly, especially if you drive a high-performance electric vehicle.
How can you make your tyres last longer?
While tyre wear is inevitable, there are a few simple ways to maximise tyre life:
- Check your tyre pressures regularly.
- Avoid harsh acceleration where possible.
- Have your wheel alignment checked if you notice uneven tyre wear.
- Inspect your rear tyres regularly rather than waiting for your MOT or electric car service.
A quick visual inspection every few weeks could save you from an unexpected tyre replacement.
Need tyres for your BYD Seal?
At Lindleys Tyres & Alignment on Daleside Road, we regularly inspect, align and replace tyres on electric vehicles, including the BYD Seal.
This particular vehicle arrived on its original 235/45 R19 99V Continental Premium Contact 6 tyres. After discussing the options with the customer, we replaced all four with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 (235/45 R19 99V XL) tyres.
The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is a premium tyre that offers excellent wet grip, precise handling and low rolling resistance, making it a popular choice for powerful electric vehicles.
If you’ve noticed your BYD Seal’s rear tyres wearing faster than expected, our experienced team can check your tread depth, inspect the wear pattern and carry out a professional wheel alignment if required.
