Can I mix different brand tyres on my car?
The time has come for you to replace your tyres, we’ve all been there, and the majority of people have much interest in tyres until they need replacing. What do I do?
Whether you’ve had a puncture, or your tyres are worn and need replacing, it can be a confusing decision. Do I replace with the same as my other tyres or shall I replace with another brand?
What do I need to consider?
Whilst it’s perfectly legal to mix different brand tyres on your vehicle, this may not always be the best thing to do and there are things to consider before making that decision.
For example, differences in another brand tyre could result in a marked difference in performance which ultimately may end up causing your car damage and costing you more money.
Why do people use different brand tyres?
The obvious and main reason people purchase differing brand tyres is due to price.
Tyres can be expensive, and it could be tempting to save yourself money by opting for a cheaper option from another brand.
Another reason could be down to options being limited; if you have a puncture and another brand is the only tyre available, there really isn’t much choice but to purchase that tyre.
Do Lindleys Autocentres recommend using different brand tyres?
You may have heard that tyres should be replaced in axle pairs. Is this true?
To put it simply, yes this is the ideal outcome, and we recommend it as the safest and most economical option.
Whilst you may only need one tyre replacing, if you fit a brand new tyre on one side of the axle and leave an older or different tread pattern on the other side, it could cause you problems in the future such as uneven tyre wear and making emergency braking more dangerous.
Ideally you would have the same tyre brand and pattern on all 4 wheels, but we understand this is not always possible, so the safest and most economical option is to replace in axle pairs if you find yourself in that situation.
